The Wasp Spider (Argiope bruennichi) is a particularly striking species of orb weaver found throughout much of Europe, as well as parts of North Africa and Asia. If it wasn't obvious, its name comes from the yellow-and-black markings across its abdomen, which give it a distinctly wasp-like appearance without any of the stinging.

Like other orb weavers, it constructs an impressive spiral web, often with a thick zigzag of silk running through the center. Known as a stabilimentum, exactly why spiders add this strange little flourish is still debated.

Females are considerably larger than males, and things can get a little rough in the romance department. Males are frequently eaten by the female during or after mating.

This real specimen has been preserved in clear resin with all eight legs spread, allowing you to safely examine the spider from every angle. A great little addition to a natural history collection, desk, curiosity cabinet, or wherever else you prefer to keep your spiders permanently contained.
