Featured Beetle: Papilio Ulysses
Location: San Francisco
The Papilio ulysses, aka the Ulysses Butterfly or Blue Mountain Swallowtail, is a stunning butterfly from the Papilionidae family, native to Australia, Papua New Guinea, and nearby islands. It's known for its eye-catching iridescent blue wings with black edges that sparkle in the sunlight. You'll typically find it in tropical rainforests, flitting around flowering plants to sip nectar. Its larvae munch on trees from the Rutaceae family, like citrus. Fun fact: this butterfly is actually used as a symbol for tourism in Queensland, Australia—so not only is it gorgeous, but some might say it's also a travel ambassador. Does this count as a butterfly chasing its career goals? We like to think so.
