These golden beetles are the envy of pharaohs, prospectors, and rappers alike. Cyclommatus metallifer finae, also known as the “Golden Metallic Stag Beetle,” looks like a piece of bling that came to life and started propagating in the forests of Indonesia. While they are dressed in the finery of a king, that does not mean they will not get their hands dirty. The males use their long, curved mandibles to spar with other males to gain access to females. These battles usually end when one is flung from the tree, leaving the victor high in the treetops.
They are mostly active at night, which makes sense given their “I’m going clubbing in the 80’s” vibe. Rather than sipping on overpriced drinks, these metallic marvels drink tree sap, and the larvae feed on decaying hardwood. Yum. What else could we say about this insanely beautiful and ornate beetle that gleams before you? Well, nothing really, other than if you are looking to get into insect pinning or want a beetle that looks like it escaped from Fort Knox, this is the class for you.
