A harbinger of bad omens and a night of tasty drinks? “Where do I sign up?” is probably what you are thinking, and we already have the answer. Paxton Gate’s After Hours is back, just in time for spooky season. Not only are we relaunching the After Hours event, but we are doing it with one of the most requested insects of all time, the Death’s-head moth.
But what is an After Hours event? Good question. It is a mix of entomology, specialty cocktails, and a behind-the-scenes look at Paxton Gate. Think of one of our insect-spreading classes, but perfect for a night out or a unique date night. After all, nothing is more romantic than spreading insects in a room full of taxidermy.
We are also thrilled to announce that this event will be in partnership with Angel’s Envy and Third Rail Distillery, which means the drinks will be nothing short of stellar. This is an event dripping with Halloween vibes and one you definitely do not want to miss.
About the Death’s Head Moth:
A creature steeped in mystery, folklore, and myth, the Death’s-head moth has long captured imaginations. In Europe, it was often called the “harbinger of death,” and seeing one was thought to be a sign of ill fortune. In Poland, it earned the nickname the “wandering bird of death,” with its squeak likened to the moaning of a grief-stricken child. Charming, right? In France, it was even believed that dust from the moth’s wings could cause blindness. Makes total sense to us. Overall, this moth has some truly heartwarming “Chicken Soup for the Soul” style stories surrounding it...
In reality, the Death’s-head moth gets all this attention because of the distinct skull marking on its back. It was even featured in a film about a very hungry doctor because of its grim appearance. But is all the superstition warranted? You will have to attend the event to decide for yourself.
