Sometimes you just want to go back to the classics. The quintessential option that feels as comfortable as your favorite worn-out pair of jeans. But going back to what is familiar does not have to be boring. The Columbus Butterfly (Eurytides columbus) scratches that need for comfort while also making it a delight to settle in and revisit what feels like the start of it all. Insect spreading can take you down many roads, including scorpions, beetles, centipedes, and a whole host of other otherworldly creatures, but spreading a good-looking butterfly is like spending a weekend at home.

Aside from the familiarity of the Columbus, it is actually a pretty unique butterfly when all is said and done. For starters, it is a relatively rare and localized species in the Neotropics around northern South America, particularly in Colombia. It is also quite the looker. Eurytides columbus comes with some seriously fancy tails on its hind wings. These “sword tails” make it look dramatic and unforgettable, and probably help confuse predators while it is showing off in the forests. After all, who would want to eat such a well-dressed butterfly?

The vivid yellows of its wings pop against the black, creating a striking contrast. On the underside, the marginal area of the forewing is “purplish-white,” which can trick your eyes when trying to determine if it is more purple or white, almost like the “What color is the dress?” image that went viral on the internet.

If you are looking to settle in, get back to basics, and still push the boundaries, this is the class for you.
