During the best season of the year (obviously we're talking about the Fall), leaves are everywhere, so much so that they can become a bit of a nuisance. They are just fallen plant matter, but they add to the charm of autumn, which is why these leaf fossils are so fascinating. It is amazing that what might seem like simple afterthoughts of the natural world can tell us so much about Earth’s ancient history, from prehistoric climate to the plant diversity of the area, and even piecing together what the ecosystem looked like millions of years ago.

These particular leaves come from the Green River Formation, a famous Eocene fossil deposit in the western United States, mainly in present-day Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. They are about 50 million years old and were preserved in fine lake sediments. Some fossil plates from this formation contain broadleaf fossils, including big lobed sycamore leaves, palm leaves, hardwoods like oak and maple, and other flowering leaves with clearly defined vein patterns.
