Butterflies are already doing a lot of heavy lifting in the “being cool” department. They undergo complete metamorphosis, come in an absurd variety of colors and patterns, and there are more than 17,500 known species scattered around the world.
About the Morpho adonis:
The Morpho adonis is the kind of butterfly that looks like someone got a little carried away with the saturation slider. Its wings are an absolutely ridiculous electric blue, shifting and flashing as the light hits them. Somehow, though, that's just what it looks like.
Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, the Morpho adonis gets its brilliant color not primarily from blue pigment, but from microscopic structures on its wing scales that interact with light. This structural coloration is what gives the wings their intense, almost metallic appearance.
Like other morphos, the underside is considerably more subdued, trading all that brilliant blue for earthy browns and eye-like markings that help it blend into its surroundings when its wings are closed. Business up top, camouflage underneath.
As with all natural specimens, expect slight variations, imperfections, and the occasional bit of weirdness. That's part of what makes them cool.
