The Caligo atreus, or Yellow-edged Giant Owl butterfly, is one of those insects that seems to have a completely different personality depending on which side of its wings you’re looking at. From above, its wings flash deep blue and violet with warm yellow-orange markings. Flip it over, and suddenly you’re staring into a pair of enormous owl-like eyes.

Those dramatic eyespots are thought to help confuse or startle predators, giving the butterfly a chance to make its escape. Native to Central and South America, Caligo atreus can reach a wingspan of around 5 to 6 inches, making it a pretty massive butterfly on top of already being a particularly weird and beautiful one.
