Nature is remarkably good at following a blueprint, but every once in a while, development takes an unusual turn. One of those unusual turns leads us here, to this absolutely insanely cool piece. This is truly a crown jewel for any collection and one that’s exceptionally rare to come across. And if you’re wondering, “Is it a real specimen?” Yes. It very much is. That’s part of the reason why it’s so dang cool.

So, we’ve established that it’s cool, but what exactly happened here? This domestically raised sheep exhibits a rare congenital condition known as partial conjoined twinning, or duplicitas posterior. The condition begins during early embryonic development when a single embryo starts to divide but does not completely separate, resulting in duplicated portions of the body.

Conjoined twins are exceptionally uncommon in sheep, making specimens like this a rare example of developmental biology. They offer a physical look at just how complicated embryonic development really is and how much has to happen in exactly the right order to produce the anatomy we consider "normal."
