Onyx is instantly recognizable. It’s a stone that seems to swallow light into its mirrored black surface while somehow reflecting that light out from its shadowy depths. That might be a little dramatic, but you get what we mean. It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.

Here’s a fun fact: the name “onyx” comes from the Greek word “ónux,” meaning fingernail, because the stone’s smooth, layered appearance was thought to resemble a fingernail. We would have thought it meant something along the lines of midnight or abyss, but no. It means fingernail. Oh, those wacky ancient Greeks and their funny naming conventions.

On a more scientific note, onyx forms as layers of chalcedony deposited in volcanic or sedimentary rock cavities over long periods. It’s kind of fun how some of the prettiest stones and crystals form in the most inhospitable environments. The distinctive bands or solid colors come from differences in mineral content during formation. Onyx is found worldwide, often in volcanic regions or sedimentary rock formations, including Brazil, India, Uruguay, and the United States.

According to metaphysics, onyx is considered a stone of protection and grounding. It is believed to absorb negative energy, promote inner strength and resilience, enhance focus, and support emotional balance.
