It’s always fun to own a piece in your collection that has a story, especially one that arrived on our planet relatively recently. The Sikhote-Alin meteorite is one of the most famous meteorite falls in modern history. It’s an iron meteorite that fell in eastern Russia in 1947 and is well known for the dramatic way it entered Earth’s atmosphere. The fireball was brighter than the sun, and pieces of the meteorite rained down over an area of about 1 square mile. When the fragments hit the ground, they created more than 100 craters. See? We told you it was dramatic.
That means less than 100 years ago, these pieces were still hurtling through space on their way to crash into Earth. That’s just really cool to us. It’s not often you get to hold a piece of the cosmos that just finished its trek across the stars. That’s mind-bendingly cool to us.
