With a name like “Dragon Egg”, how can you not love these? Aside from the somewhat nerdy reason we love them (The writer of this description is a total nerd for dragons), they are absolutely beautiful. So what are these stony eggs apparently bestowed to us by mythological creatures? Septarian eggs are uniquely formed as a result of volcanic eruptions and ocean sediments that form mud balls. As the balls shrink, marvelous crystals and distinctive patterns are formed. These magical mud balls turned crystal marvels originated during the Cretaceous period somewhere between 50-70 million years ago. The name is derived from the word "septum", meaning "portion", due to the fact that the Limestone mud masses from which it forms have dried and cracked into distinctive shapes before filling with dark brown aragonite crystal. As a fun aside, they are also UV reactive. If you’ve already got a black light and a groovy wizard poster on the wall, these fit right in!
