Roe deer are small deer native to Europe and parts of Asia, and unlike many deer species, they’re mostly solitary rather than wandering around in large herds. They’re also surprisingly adaptable and can be found everywhere from forests and farmland to areas uncomfortably close to people.

The males, called bucks, grow a new set of antlers every year. They’re usually short with three points on each antler, but age, nutrition, genetics, and the occasional bit of biological weirdness can produce some pretty funky shapes. The antlers are shed in the fall and begin growing again soon afterward under a soft layer of velvet.

Fun fact: roe deer are also one of the few hoofed mammals that use embryonic diapause. They mate in summer, but development of the embryo essentially pauses for several months before continuing later in the year. This lets the fawns arrive in spring when conditions are much more favorable. Nature apparently invented the snooze button long before we did.

About These Mounts:

These vintage roe deer skull caps come from an old European collection, and some still have handwritten locations, dates, and other markings from their previous lives as collected specimens. That history makes each one a little different and, frankly, a lot more interesting than something newly prepared.

Some have city or date marks, including: 'hochriegel, 2.VM., 1936', 'Trogerlal, 4.VU. 1935', etc.
