The male Ring-Necked Pheasant is famous for its bright, iridescent feathers, flashy red face, and the perfectly neat white ring around its neck. Think of it as the peacock’s slightly more approachable cousin. Native to Asia but introduced widely in North America for hunting and ornamental purposes, these birds are adaptable, hardy, and impossible to ignore when strutting through a field.

Males are the ones doing all the feather-fluffing, crowing, and general attention-grabbing while the females quietly mind their business. Their diet is a mix of seeds, insects, and plants, and they’re most active at dawn and dusk. If birds had a “look at me” award, the male Ring-Necked Pheasant would win, hands down, tail feathers first.
