Lemurian crystals are unique quartz crystals, pure and clear in the middle. Their unique hallmark is the horizontal "stripes" on one or more sides. It seems as if engraved by someone's hand, or rather a laser. Thanks to a thin layer of iron oxide, they can be colored slightly red like these. Originally, they were thought to come only from the Joaquim Felicio region of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, but were also found in the high mountain areas of Diamantina and Corinto. Since discovery, they have appeared and other formations around the world. The shape and structure of the crystal are also distinctive and definitive characteristics of Lemurian quartz; traditional Lemurian crystals have a hexagonal base, and three of the sides generally taper inward towards a triangular tip. The striations typically occur on alternating facets, and it is the non-tapered sides which tend to feature the striations. The interior of the crystal is most commonly translucent but some examples are beautifully transparent and others are almost entirely opaque.
