Orthoceras, or “straight horn,” is the name commonly given to an extinct group of straight-shelled cephalopods that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. These ancient sea creatures were relatives of the modern-day squid, octopus, and nautilus, and ranged in size from just a few inches to several feet long.

Like other shelled cephalopods, they had chambered shells that helped control their buoyancy, allowing them to move through the ancient seas while propelling themselves with jets of water. When they died, their shells settled on the seafloor, where they were buried by sediment and, over millions of years, fossilized into the stone we find today.

Pretty impressive for something that has been dead longer than dinosaurs have existed.

How these are made: 

They’re made by carving bowls directly from fossil-bearing limestone, typically from Morocco. The stone naturally contains the straight-shelled cephalopod fossils commonly sold as “Orthoceras.” After the bowl is cut and hollowed out, it’s ground and polished, revealing the lighter fossils against the dark limestone.

According to metaphysics: All fossils are thought to support transformation and change. Orthoceras in particular is believed to activate our root chakra by grounding us down to earth with ancient energy.
