Piranhas have a reputation that precedes them, and frankly, it’s a little unfair. Yes, they have a mouth full of extremely sharp teeth. Yes, those teeth interlock like a tiny set of flesh-cutting shears. And yes, a group of them can make quick work of a meal. But the idea that piranhas are constantly lurking beneath the surface waiting to reduce anything unfortunate enough to fall into the water to a skeleton is mostly the work of movies, sensational stories, and our general enthusiasm for making animals scarier than they actually are.

That being said, take a look at those teeth.

Triangular, razor-sharp, and tightly interlocking, they’re designed to slice off pieces of food with remarkable efficiency. Piranhas also have powerful jaws for their size, making the business end of one of these fish considerably more impressive than its relatively modest proportions might suggest.

So no, a piranha probably isn’t going to strip you to the bone the second you dip a toe into the Amazon. But we still wouldn’t recommend sticking your finger in its mouth.
