Definitely one of the cutest pieces of taxidermy we have ever had, this ostrich chick is a no-brainer addition to any collection. While this specimen is just a chick, it is already huge. Ostriches lay the largest eggs of any living bird, about the size of a cantaloupe. And when you look at this baby ostrich, it is easy to see why they need such big eggs. This particular specimen was stillborn and was preserved shortly after death.

Ostriches in general are fascinating creatures. They are the biggest birds on Earth and, as you might already know, they cannot fly. But they more than make up for that with their incredible speed. An adult ostrich can run up to 45 mph. For comparison, Usain Bolt’s fastest recorded speed was 27.78 mph.

Another fun ostrich fact is that they have huge eyes, even bigger than their brains, which help them spot predators from far away. And instead of chirping, they hiss, boom, and even roar. Yes, roar. It makes sense when you realize these giant birds are actually related to dinosaurs. All birds, including ostriches, are considered modern-day dinosaurs. They evolved from a group of theropod dinosaurs and share a common ancestor with the ones that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. That roar is like a small echo of an ancient world where giants ruled the land.

All that said, this taxidermy chick might just be the cutest little relative of an extinct carnivorous predator you will ever see.
