Born from volcanoes and capable of getting ridiculously sharp, obsidian is basically nature's glass. It forms when lava cools so quickly that crystals don't have time to grow, creating a smooth, dark volcanic glass with a seriously impressive shine.
Humans have been putting obsidian to work for thousands of years, shaping it into weapons, tools, ornaments, and even mirrors. Thanks to the way it fractures, obsidian can form incredibly sharp edges. And when we say sharp, we mean sharp. Obsidian blades can produce edges far finer than your average steel blade.
According to metaphysics, black obsidian is said to act like a shield against negative and unwanted energies, drawing negativity out and neutralizing it. During the Middle Ages, it was even used to drive out evil spirits and demons. Today, it's commonly used to clear unwanted energy from the aura or home.
So, you know, a shiny chunk of volcanic glass that's been used for blades, mirrors, and fighting demons. Not a bad résumé for a rock.
