Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is an igneous rock. Black obsidian is formed when a volcano erupts and the lava cools very quickly. Black obsidian stone is also known as volcanic glass, xaga, and royal agate because of the depth of its color.

Obsidian has been used across history to make weapons, implements, tools, ornaments, and mirrors. Because of its conchoidal fracture (smooth curved surfaces and sharp edges), the sharpest stone artifacts were fashioned from obsidian.

According the metaphysics:  It is said to draw the negativity out and into the earth where it is neutralized. During the Middle Ages it was used to drive out evil spirits and demons.  Today it's used to clear unwanted energies from the aura or from within the home.  It acts like a shield repelling negative or harmful energies.
