A version of the Capitoline Museum's Medusa by Bernini

This bust shows Medusa, the famous character from Ovid’s classic myth, created by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. We’re not exactly sure when the original was made, but it’s probably from the 1640s. It was first mentioned in 1731 when it was given to the Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome, and now you can see it at the Capitoline Museums. Or, if you can go to Rome anytime soon, you can pick this one up and enjoy it from the comfort of your couch.

Medusa’s story is pretty tragic. She used to be a beautiful woman but got turned into a monster as a punishment. Now, anyone who looks at her turns to stone. It’s a story about beauty, betrayal, and sadness, which makes her both scary and kind of heartbreaking.
