This set includes two key regolith samples engineered to be chemically and physically identical to the surface dust of Mars. The Martian Global Regolith Simulant represents an average of surface material based on data collected by the Curiosity and Opportunity rovers. It was developed to help NASA and JPL prepare for Mars missions by testing rover wheel designs, growing crops, and creating building materials. Its distinctive red color comes from a relatively high iron content.
The Jezero Crater Regolith Simulant is modeled after the surface material at the Perseverance rover’s 2020 landing site in Jezero Crater. This sample is slightly lighter in color than the global average due to its specific mineral composition, as observed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The site is believed to have once been an ancient lakebed.
