Lemon Jasper, an absolutely stunning variety of jasper, captivates us with its cheerful hues of yellow and pale green, that reminds us of the citrus it’s named after. Also known as "Yellow Jasper," this gemstone's history is rooted in its use as a protective and nurturing stone in various cultures. It has quite the list of impactful metaphysical properties but we’ll get to that in a minute. But what exactly is lemon jasper? Glad you asked.
Jasper itself is a microcrystalline variety of the mineral chalcedony. Microcrystalline means its crystals are too small to be seen with the naked eye. The formation of jasper can begin when loose sediments become stuck together. This happens when groundwater containing silica that has seeped into sedimentary rock dries up. The silica then acts like glue and cements everything together.
In regards to Lemon Jasper, it is an opaque, microcrystalline variety of Quartz with large, grainy crystals rather than the fibrous layers of Chalcedony or Agate. It occurs in nodules or as fillings in fissures and is found all over the world. Its mustard, sandy or burnished yellow coloration is due to high iron content, and may contain other minerals or impurities that create rich patterns and veining. These tumbled stones really highlight the formation and fibrous layers within.
