The Western Joshua Tree is an evergreen succulent in the agave subfamily of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). Among the various species of Yuccas, which include over 40 types with thick, fleshy tissues designed to store water, the Joshua Tree stands out as the most iconic, impressive, and spectacular.

Native to the arid southwestern United States, Joshua Trees are strongly associated with the Mojave Desert. They are a key indicator species for the health of the desert ecosystem across southern California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and into northwestern Mexico. These trees thrive at elevations ranging from the desert floor to over 7,000 feet. They are resilient, withstanding extreme temperatures that can dip well below freezing or soar above 120°F.

Yucca brevifolia, the largest of all Yuccas, typically grows to about 40 feet in height at maturity. The tallest known Joshua Tree reaches over 50 feet, and the most robust has a trunk diameter of 4.5 feet (14 feet in circumference). Reaching such remarkable sizes takes centuries, as Joshua Trees grow just 2–3 inches per year when young, slowing to about half that rate after the first decade. Though their growth may seem slow, it is notably strong for desert species and contributes to the Joshua Tree's dominance in the Mojave ecosystem. These trees can live for centuries, with some individuals thought to be over a thousand years old.
