Hematite is the mineral form of iron oxide, one of several iron oxides. This magnetic mineral's name is derived from the Greek word for blood: underneath its smooth, metallic surface is a deep red-colored mineral. Hematite generally originates by precipitating in layers at the bottom of lakes and other bodies of water, but it is also formed from volcanic activity.
