Masters of desert survival and duelists without equal, the gemsbok is one of our absolute favorite antelopes. How can you not love them with their dramatic horns and striking coloration? It’s not only an aesthetic choice. These guys are super fascinating.

The most prominent thing on the gemsbok is its long, saber-like horns. Just look at them. That is one serious arsenal attached to their heads. These aren’t just for show either. Gemsbok have been known to kill predators, including lions, when defending themselves. Not only that, but both the males and the females sport these pointy “don’t even try it” horns.

Not only are they armed and dangerous, they are tough as nails and live in some of the most inhospitable places on Earth. Gemsbok live in places like the Kalahari Desert, where temperatures can get extreme. They’ve adapted to handle heat that would wipe out most animals. They have developed some interesting adaptations to better handle the outdoor oven they live in. Instead of sweating right away, they let their body temperature rise to reduce water loss. It’s like built-in heat tolerance. Not only that, but their bold black-and-white facial markings actually help reduce glare and may play a role in temperature regulation.

They barely need water, as they get most of their hydration from plants, especially roots and tubers. Speaking of their snacking habits, the gemsbok is an excellent digger, as it needs to get to those roots and tubers. Makes sense, right?

While these are very large animals, they have some serious speed. In short bursts, they can run up to about 35–40 mph. As a reference point, Usain Bolt reached about 27–28 mph during his fastest recorded race. Considering the gemsbok has two giant pikes sticking out from its head, we wouldn’t want to be in front of that. Vlad the Impaler would approve, though.

Important Shipping Info For Oversized Items:

Please Note: Oversized items like this do not qualify for the free shipping discount.

For more information about our shipping policies, please see our shipping page.

Please note:  We will do our best to ship via conventional methods, but some mounts are just too big for carriers to handle safely.

Non-Conventional: If we are unable to ship via conventional methods, we recommend a taxidermy-specific carrier called Trophy Transport. Once purchased, we ask that you reach out to them to arrange shipping and payment. After that is done, we will work out the logistics and pickup with them.

We can also work with another carrier of your choice, but for taxidermy, they are generally the best and most affordable option since they do not need to crate the piece which is expensive.

For more information, please email us at info@PaxtonGate.com or see our shipping page here.

All orders ship same or next business day with exception to oversized items. Those items will be identified in the description (Items such as large taxidermy, skulls or exceedingly heavy minerals).

If the subtotal of your order is over $98 the shipping is free (the discount is applied automatically to the cart at checkout)

If there is an issue with your order or something arrives damaged, we will refund or replace the item.

Oversized items are only available for pick-up or if you arrange the shipping yourself. This will be indicated in the item description. However, we do have a very reliable and affordable option for shipping. For more information, please click here. We can also work with a shipping provider of your choosing.

For more information surrounding shipping or shipping rates, please email us at Orders@PaxtonGate.com
