Bats are amazing little creatures with a reputation shrouded in legends and mystery. From being the transformation of a unholy blood sucker to a symbol of good luck and fortune, these masters of nocturnal hunting have stirred the imaginations of millions. They are the only mammal capable of flight and make up one-quarter of all mammals on the planet. They are vital to the control of insect populations. In one cave in Texas alone, it is estimated that the 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats that live there eat about 200 tons of insects each night. Think of the money saved on cortisone cream!

Horseshoe bats are bats in the family Rhinolophidae. In addition to the single living genus, Rhinolophus, which has about 106 species, the extinct genus Palaeonycteris has been recognized. Horseshoe bats are closely related to the Old World leaf-nosed bats, family Hipposideridae, which have sometimes been included in Rhinolophidae.
