The bush duiker is basically the fun-sized model of the antelope world. It’s small, comes with a pair of short, sharp horns, and has managed to set up shop almost everywhere in Africa south of the Sahara, except for the Horn of Africa and the thick rainforests in the west and central regions. In other words, if you’re wandering through Africa and you’re not in a jungle or desert tip, there’s a good chance a duiker is watching you from behind a bush.

The name duiker comes from Afrikaans and literally means “to dive.” That’s exactly what this little antelope does when trouble shows up. No dramatic chase scenes, no sticking around to see what happens next, just a lightning-fast drop into the nearest thicket.
