Dragonflies are basically tiny prehistoric helicopters, which is already reason enough to like them. They’ve been buzzing around the planet in one form or another for hundreds of millions of years, long before flowers, birds, or humans showed up to appreciate how weird they are.

Fast, agile, and scary good efficient hunters, dragonflies spend much of their lives underwater as aquatic nymphs before emerging, shedding their old exoskeleton, and taking to the air. As adults, their enormous compound eyes give them an almost panoramic view of the world, while their four independently controlled wings allow them to hover, fly backward, and make turns that would be deeply unpleasant in an actual helicopter.
