The Callipogon beetle looks a little like someone took a perfectly normal beetle and decided it needed more beetle. Bigger body, bigger mandibles, bigger everything.

Native to Central and South America, Callipogon are among the larger members of the longhorn beetle family. Males are particularly impressive, sporting oversized mandibles that are used when competing with other males. Despite looking like they could take off a finger, they’re far more interested in fighting each other than fighting you.

Large, strange, and just a little prehistoric-looking, the Callipogon is an excellent beetle for anyone who believes subtlety is overrated.
