This whimsical illustration of butterflies and flowers was first published in 1842 in "Le Jardin des Plantes" (The Garden Plants), a two volume set by Pierre Bernard, which depicts plants of the garden as well as birds, crustaceans, and insects in their natural settings. The set was originally created as a picturesque encyclopedia of the Botanical Garden of Paris, which is part of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
