The Bullet Ant has one very important claim to fame: its sting really, really hurts. In fact, it's widely considered to have one of the most painful insect stings on Earth. Its name comes from people comparing the pain to being shot, which feels like a pretty strong hint that you should probably leave this ant alone.

Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, Bullet Ants are absolute units by ant standards, growing over an inch long and looking more like something you'd expect to encounter in a monster movie than crawling around an anthill. Despite their intimidating reputation, they aren't particularly aggressive and generally won't sting unless they feel threatened.

But if they do? You're in for a bad day.

Entomologist Justin O. Schmidt famously gave the Bullet Ant the highest rating on his insect sting pain index, describing the experience as intense, debilitating pain that can last for hours. So, while we love getting up close and personal with the natural world, this is one curiosity we're perfectly happy admiring from a comfortable distance.
