Black amethyst is a darker variety of amethyst, a quartz crystal known for its deep purple hues. The dark coloration results from higher iron content and natural geological conditions during its formation.

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry. The name comes from the Ancient Greek for not intoxicated, a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and made drinking vessels decorated with it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. Cleopatra is said to have worn a ring made of Amethyst engraved with the image of Mithras, a Persian. It is one of several forms of quartz.
