The Black-backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) is a medium-sized canid native to eastern and southern Africa. It is easily recognized by the distinctive black saddle marking on its back, contrasting with its reddish-brown fur and white underparts. Highly adaptable, this jackal thrives in various habitats, including savannas, deserts, and coastal areas.

Black-backed jackals are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on small mammals, birds, carrion, insects, and fruit. They are known for their intelligence, scavenging skills, and occasional cooperative hunting.
