The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a small but remarkably agile antelope native to the dry, open plains of southern Africa. Easily recognized by its reddish-brown coat, white face, and dark markings, the springbok is perhaps best known for a behavior called “pronking.” When excited or alarmed, it launches itself into the air with all four legs held stiff, sometimes reaching impressive heights. Why run away normally when you can dramatically bounce across the savanna?

Springboks are exceptionally well adapted to life in arid environments. They feed on grasses, leaves, and shrubs and can go extended periods without drinking, getting much of the moisture they need directly from the plants they eat. They’re also highly social and can gather in herds numbering in the hundreds when conditions are right.

The springbok is the national animal of South Africa, where it has become an enduring symbol of the country’s wildlife.
