Phacops is a genus of ancient aquatic arthropods known as trilobites, and their fossils are often found in Silurian and Devonian rocks—dating back around 359 to 444 million years ago—mostly in Europe and North America. These prehistoric sea creatures were bottom-dwellers and distant relatives of today’s horseshoe crabs. With their hard, segmented exoskeletons, they could roll up just like modern-day roly-polies.
One of the coolest things about Phacops is its large, well-developed compound eyes made up of tons of tiny lenses. These gave it excellent vision, probably useful for spotting predators or prey. On many of these fossils, you can still see the textured remains of those eyes—and it’s honestly one of our favorite features. These little guys are full of intricate details, and every time you take a closer look, there’s something new to appreciate. We never get tired of them.
These are great budget pick for starting off your fossil collection or adding to it without breaking the bank. They are also great for jewelry making!
