Hematite is the mineral form of iron oxide, one of several iron oxides. This magnetic mineral's name is derived from the Greek word for blood: underneath its smooth, metallic surface is a deep red-colored mineral. Hematite generally originates by precipitating in layers at the bottom of lakes and other bodies of water, but it is also formed from volcanic activity. In 2001, hematite was discovered on the surface of Mars!

Each hematite piece is about one square inch. We recommend buying at least a few pieces to enjoy their magnetic properties, up to a few dozen to use them as blocks or magnets around the house.
