Frog-legged Beetle (Sagra longicollis) (Family: Chrysomelidae)
This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, meaning that males and females show differences in appearance and behaviour - in this case, the males of the species have enlarged frog-like hind legs. Despite the name, they do not use these to jump. It is still currently unknown exactly why these insects have evolved such oversized limbs, but entomologists theorise that it may have a role in courtship, either to attract females or compete against other males.
Ethical sourcing is our number one priority. All of our taxidermy, skulls, bones, sea life and other natural science specimens have met our rigorous standards. See our "about us" section for more information or contact us with specific question.
All insects and Butterflies vary slightly in size and shape. You will receive a high quality specimen of the selected item but not the exact one pictured.
