This is one big ol’ bug. The Vespa mandarinia “bellona” (Asian giant hornet) is one of the largest hornets in the world. It is a predatory insect that mainly hunts other insects, especially honeybees, sometimes raiding and destroying entire hives to feed its larvae. In other words, a terrible neighbor. Despite its bad rap, it doesn’t usually target humans and only stings in defense of its nest. Seems fair to us. Speaking of its sting, it’s very painful (as you might have guessed) and can be dangerous if multiple stings occur or if someone has an allergic reaction, but it is not typically deadly on its own. Silver lining, we suppose. Aside from it being an absolute menace in the insect world, it does make for a cool specimen, and this one comes ready to frame.
