Dogtooth calcite is a type of calcium carbonate crystal that looks just like a row of sharp teeth (hence the name). Most are white or clear, but some can be yellow, brown, pink, or even green if minerals sneak in. Obviously, some minerals have snuck into these, giving them a deep green in some spots and a burnt orange in others. These crystals usually form in caves, geodes, or rock cavities and can range from tiny points to several centimeters long. Speaking of its size, dogtooth calcite grows slowly over thousands of years, often forming alongside stalactites and stalagmites. Sometimes it is confused for its cave-dwelling neighbors because of its appearance. Each “tooth” is technically called a scalenohedron, which is just a fancy word for a pointy crystal shape. These are a new addition for us, and we are stoked to carry them.
