These green onyx, for example, show flashes of bright orange and hues of light green, yellow, and red. It's formed when silica-rich water slowly seeps into cracks or cavities in rocks and hardens over time. Tiny amounts of minerals like chromium or iron mix in during this process, giving the stone its rich green color. Layers sometimes form as the silica deposits, creating subtle banding.
