We're very excited to bring you this truly remarkable specimen originating from Siberia. This fossilized Cave Hyena skull is approximately 30,000 years old! Cave Hyenas were a subspecies of the spotted hyena, which is the only modern living member of the Crocuta family. Cave Hyenas, also known as the Ice Age Spotted Hyena, were encountered by prehistoric humans and depicted in cave art, including the Chavet Cave and Lascaux. This species once ranged from the Iberian Peninsula to Russia. They weighed around 230 pounds, hunted in packs, and ate wild horses, steppe bison, and woolly rhinoceros. This skull has been excellently preserved to near perfection due to it being protected from the elements deep within a cave for 30,000 years.
This breath-taking specimen is available at Paxton Gate PDX, a licensed
brand of Paxton Gate SF, located on NW 23rd Avenue Portland, Oregon store.
