Ammonites  are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals which died out at the end of the Cretaceous period. These mollusks are more closely related to living coleoids (i.e. octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish) than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the living Nautilus species. Ammonites first appearing in the fossil record 240 million years ago, descending from straight shelled cephalopods. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
Agatized ammonites exhibit mineralization within the chambers, each separated by white calcite scepta. These agatized ammonite fossils have been polished so that the inner chambers are visible at the same time as the suture pattern.
