That’s because the largest shark ever was still roaming the open seas looking for its next meal. The Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon), meaning "big tooth" was the greatest shark to have ever swam the ocean. For 13 million years it dominated the oceans and was considered by today's standards to be a living, biting sea monster. Estimates suggest it grew to between 15 and 18 meters in length, three times longer than the largest recorded great white shark. It was estimated to weigh between 53 to 114 tons which is equal to as many as sixteen adult male African elephants. That’s a lot of shark.

Like all sharks, Megalodon produced a crazy amount of teeth. They had five rows of over 270 sharp teeth that could grow over 7 inches long and over 4 inches wide at the base. A literal conveyor belt of triangular steak knives the size of your hand were constantly being produced from its jaws. Scientists theorized that the Megalodon hunted and attacked its prey in a similar fashion as today’s great white sharks —ambushing its target from below, and ripping chunks of flesh and fin with one calculated strike. This would leave its target incapacitated and easier to feed upon. With all of that flesh-ripping going on, its teeth would suffer the brunt of the impact. This would cause them to lose more than a few teeth in the attack. A lot of the fossil teeth we have today came from such attacks.

Considering how many teeth this behemoth lost throughout its life, it’s no wonder we have been finding them throughout history. Studies have indicated that drastic shifts in the food chain may have led to the giant's demise. Simply put, there wasn’t enough food to sustain such a large predator.

The structure of the skull was very similar to that of the modern monitor lizards, to which mosasaurs are related. The jaws bore many conical, slightly recurved teeth set in individual sockets. That's a lot of evolution to support their romantic ways. The calls made by the bird range from deep booming sounds as they begin foraging to brays, toots, bellows, and cackles. Smoky quartz is a type of quartz crystal known for its dark, smoky appearance (hints the name). It ranges in color from light to dark brown and even black. The unique coloring comes from radiation that occurs naturally within the Earth’s crust as well as exposure to high temperatures during formation. Nothing like a good dose of radiation to add some color to your crystal collection. It’s been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until recently that scientists had the technology to study its fascinating crystal structure. The gemstone was first described in the 1700s, noted for its resemblance to an opaque smoky color of topaz or chalcedony. It was originally named “smoke stone” due to its uniquely dark hue. In modern times, researchers have studied smoky quartz extensively and have indeed determined the cause of its remarkable colors. The findings have shown that radiation from nearby uranium deposits have interacted with aluminum within the stone’s chemical composition. This gives it its dusky and clouded appearance. There is a certain mystique about its coloration that we absolutely adore. It’s a cornerstone in any collection and, in our opinion, one simply can not have enough smoky quartz crystals to display. Before hitting extinction along with the dinosaurs, the squid-like creatures roamed the oceans in schools, using an organ called a siphuncle to jet through the water. Their remains are simply beautiful and a cornerstone of any nautical or fossil collection.

Its name comes from the Ancient Egyptian God, Amun, who was often depicted wearing ram horns. The spiral shape of the fossil is reminiscent of those horns, hence the name. In Ancient Greece, Ammonite was thought to possess the power of Zeus. All throughout history, humans have been captivated by these beautiful fossils and enraptured by their unique spiral pattern. Thus, this stone helps promote physical well-being as well. Stimulating the second and third chakras, pyrite enhances strength of mind and willpower.
